December 12, 2012 is the last of the repeating dates to occur until January 1, 2101.

What might this mean?

Here are a variety of meaningful things about the number twelve:

The last time “12/12/12” occurred was December 12, 1912. It was a Thursday, a day just before Friday the 13th. Here’s what they said about “12-12-12” 100 years ago (from the front page of the New York Times news paper):

Symbolically, twelve represents integrity, wholeness, and completion.

The word twelve is the largest number with a single morpheme name in the English language.

The number twelve is prolific throughout the bible, including the 12 disciples of Jesus, the 12 Tribes of Israel, and much more (the number twelve is used 189 times in the Bible).

The Gospel of Thomas uses on the whole twelve different numbers: 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 24, 60, 99, 100, 120, 1000, and 10000. The sum of each of their individual occurrence results in a total of 36 (divisible 3 times by 12).

The number twelve is used seven times in the Koran.

Twelve days of Christmas.

Twelve Knights of the Round Table.

Twelve seats surrounding the throne of Odin.

The human body has twelve cranial nerves.

Twelve dozen (12 x 12) are known as a gross.

12 x 12 = 144 : which is significant in various religious and theological contexts.

12 x 9 = 108 : a number considered sacred in many Eastern religions and traditions, such as Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism, and associated toga and dharma practices. The individual numbers 1, 0, and 8 represent one thing, nothing, and everything (infinity). 108 represents the ultimate reality of the universe as being (seemingly paradoxically) simultaneously one, emptiness, and infinite.

Twelve is a number of systems and frameworks, providing evolved structure, and governing cosmic order.

There are twelve signs or constellations of the astrological zodiac.

There are twelve animals of the Chinese Horoscope.

There are twelve lunar years in the Chinese lunar calendar, a complete cycle lasting sixty years.

There are twelve primary divinities in Greek mythology.

Twelve names of the Sun in Sanskrit.

Our solar system could be considered to have twelve primary astrological bodies: Sun, Mercury, Venus, Earth, Moon, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Chiron, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto.

There are twenty-four (2 x 12) hours in a day, with twelve hours for a half day. The hours are numbered from one to twelve for both the ante meridian (a.m.) half of the day and the post meridian (p.m.) half of the day. 12:00 is both midday and midnight. A new day is considered to start with the stroke of midnight. the basic units of time (60 seconds, 60 minutes, and 24 hours) can all perfectly divide by twelve.

Twelve emerges as the synergy of the trinity and the quaternity multiplied: 3 x 4 = 12

Twelve is the first number known as “abundant” since the sum of its dividers gives a result higher than 12: 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 6 = 16 (133% in abundance).

Twelve is a sublime number, a number that has a perfect number of divisors, and the sun of its divisors is also a perfect number. Since there is a subset of 12’s proper divisors that add up to 12 (all of them but with 4 excluded), 12 is a semi perfect number.

Twelve is a superfactorial, being the product of the first three factorials, the product of three and four, the first four positive integers show up in the equation 12 = 3 x 4 (<- 1, 2, 3, 4), which can be continued with the equation 56 = 7 x 8 (<- 5, 6, 7, 8).

Twelve is a composite number, the smallest number with exactly six divisors: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 12. Interestingly, if this numeric sequence is expressed as component systems of points, the following geometric sequence emerges: point, line, triangle plane, tetrahedron solid, octahedron solid, and cuboctahedron solid:

These geometric components will naturally embed with perfect integrity and coherence into the Isotropic Vector Matrix (IVM). The IVM is a 60-degree coordinate system, and is one of the most efficient and coherent ways to organize space.

The twelve semitones derived from the seven notes of the musical scale. There are 7 white keys and 5 black keys, totalling 12.

In a 3-octave chromatic music scale, there are 3 sets of 12 keys, plus one more to close the final octave: 3 x 12 + 1 = 37. 3 x 7 is representative of the same scale if counting only the primary white keys, in which case: 3 x 7 = 21 + 1 (to close the final octave) is 22: a master number, and the number of major arcana in the Tarot card deck.

There are twelve basic hues in the color wheel: 3 primary colors (red, yellow, blue), 3 secondary colors (orange, free, purple), and 6 tertiary colors (names of these vary, tho are intermediates between the primaries and secondaries).

A cube has twelve edges.

The shape of the universe is a dodecahedron. A dodecahedron is a 3-dimensional form with 12 faces, and is one of the 5 primary platonic solids. In Plato’s dialogue Timaeus (c 360 B.C.), Plato associates the other four platonic solids with the four classical elements, adding that “there is a fifth figure (which is made out of twelve pentagons), the dodecahedron–this God uses as a model for the twelvefold division of the Zodiac.” Aristotle postulated that the heavens were made of a fifth element, “aether”. In more recent history, various dodecahedron-based models have been proposed for the geometry of the universe. These proposals include the Poincare dodecahedron space.

That’s just scratching the surface of the vast significance of the number twelve …
