Making the Unseen Seen
I once crossed digital frontiers as an early pioneer of the information age. Now I’m crossing wisdom frontiers into the inspiration age.
As an artist, I’m inspired to explore the relationship between humans, technology, and meaning making—and to utilize the advents of emerging technology to unveil and make apprehensible complex patterns of our reality that were previously unrecognized. My inspiration comes from a deep interest in coming to know the nature of reality, consciousness, and the evolution of human culture. The purpose of life is to cultivate conscious awareness—and my artistic pursuits are a vehicle of deepening awareness in myself and others.
An early near-death experience gave me a glimpse into the infinite, shaping my lifelong quest to explore the interplay between the bound and the unbound, and the spaces of substantial meaning-making in between. Insights from this experience continue emerge across the span of my life, prompting me to consider the deepest questions: who are we, why are we here, and where are we going?
From an early age, my creativity flourished across a spectrum of mediums: painting, poetry, piano, pottery, and pixels. This versatility of creating across diverse mediums has given me a sense for how the greatest truths can be expressed in multiple modalities and perspectives. This creative evolution culminated in a 20+ year career as a digital design professional and creative technologist. This path of digital dharma greatly influences my interpretation of the dynamic between humanity and technology—a primary theme in my artwork.
My intention is to explore and articulate what it means to be human during this time of extraordinary technological and cultural change. I even go further in exploring the meaning of meaning itself. As humans are fundamentally ‘meaning-making machines’, to reflect on why we make meaning is to consider our most inherent nature of being.
I endeavor to integrate and synthesize my diverse interests and work into a higher order expression of meaning through a transdisciplinary and transmedia approach. This impulse to integrate my work is a design process toward coherency of expanding awareness. I interweave gnostic philosophy, depth psychology, ancient human history, complexity science, archetypal cosmology, network technology, artificial intelligence, generative design, projective geometry, data visualization, simulation, and 3D fabrication. I pioneer and map the fringes of design and technology to make archetypal artifacts, navigational instruments, maps of meaning, multi-perspectival landscapes, and semiotic systems—in order to guide myself and others into greater conscious awareness.
I’m reaching toward a sensible realization of a high-order pattern language: an emergent super-semiotic of collective intelligence for a new human era; a future when all systems, natural and artificial, harmonize and synergize as a healthy and coherent planetary super-organism.
Overall, I call this artistic endeavor a ‘Transcendental Transmedia Transmission’. I’m inspired to move through and beyond the artistic genre of transcendental realism as an approach to transform perception into knowing–from conceptual to virtual to actual to real. My transmedia expressions span word-art (writing and poetry), image-art (drawing, painting, photography, graphic design, synthography), audio/video-art (music and motion graphics), and interactive-art (sculpture and software). In totality, this life’s work communicates everything that I am as a living transmission.
